Being an ethical lingerie brand
Sustainability is a massive issue for us and something that we want to be responsible for. There are no two ways about it, change has to happen in businesses in order to protect our planet.
As a start-up, womanhood has the potential to be ethical in several ways. Here is a breakdown of where we are at so far:
We were certain on one thing - we didn't want to create any more materials, instead, we wanted to repurpose and reuse. All of our packaging at womanhood is made from recycled materials and is fully recyclable. That includes our tissue paper, mailing boxes and thank you cards that come with each order.
We work with many amazing brands that put sustainability first - in fact, that is one of the reasons why we chose to stock them. We want to make it easier to buy underwear that is good for the enivornment. If you are looking for sustainable options try the following:
The Nude Label - all of their underwear is made with 100% GOTS organic cotton. The brand works with a family-run factory in the Spanish mountains that offer their workers equal pay in a safe working environment. They have homemade snacks and pastries available all the time and every employee has chosen the right to work. Organic cotton means no pesticides, herbicides or harmful chemicals. Organic production maintains soil fertility, reduces the use of toxic and persistant pesticides and builds biologically diverse argriculture. GOTS certifies all chemical inputs such as dyes used meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria. Also, The Nude Label use a functional wastewater treatment plant.
Nette Rose - the team in South Africa create all pieces in limited numbers to avoid deadstock. They source their materials locally with a factory that have a zero-landfill policy, utilise solar energy from our warm South African sun and have since planted 1000 olive trees to help reduce the greenhouse gas CO2 from the air and offset their emissions.
We promise to continue adding ethical brands to our mix and letting you know when we do. Hint hint .... something new is coming in 2020 that is made purely from recycled plastic.
One of the reasons we ship solely within the UK is because we don't want to increase our carbon footprint. When we do expand, it will be as ethically as possible - we promise.
A number of the brands womanhood stocks we import from overseas. To be honest, that is something we can't avoid given our agenda to work with female designers only. There aren't enough in the U.K. for our business model to work. We think it is important to support women from all corners of the earth. But that comes with a cost. Any brands we import from outside the EU we pay to offset our carbon emissions. Based on the cost of transportation a contribution is made to the climate protection project.
The Day to Day
We choose to stock smaller quantities to avoid deadstock. This may mean we sell out in your size every now and then, but it's one way for us to be responsible. We do restock certain collections, but we will never be a fast-fashion brand.
As womanhood grows, being as sustainable as possible will be at the forefront of our agenda. We want to make decisions that positively impact the world. If you have any suggestions or questions on how we can be more sustainable we are all ears - no ego's over here.
